June Meeting

Please join us on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, at the Marriott Hotel Downtown Louisville, 280 West Jefferson Street, Louisville, Kentucky, for our monthly LEBC luncheon presentation. Jean A. Young, Vanguard Center for Retirement Research, will give a presentation on Automatic Solutions and the Impact on Retirement Savings.

Jean A. Young, Vanguard Center for Retirement Research, is a Senior Research Analyst at the Vanguard Center for Retirement Research. The Center conducts and sponsors research on retirement savings and retirement benefits in the U.S. Its work is designed to assist employers, consultants, policymakers and the media in understanding developments in the U.S. retirement system. The Center conducts its own research on individual savings and investment behavior, and collaborates with leading academics and industry researchers on topics of mutual interest.

Young's research interests include the design of employer-sponsored retirement programs, and the psychological and behavioral aspects of participant decision-making. She is also the lead author for our annual publication, "How America Saves."

Young has been with Vanguard since 1996 and prior to joining the Center in 2004 was a client relationship manager in Vanguard's defined contribution recordkeeping business. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration from Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and a Masters of Science in Taxation degree from Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania. She is a C.P.A. and holds series 6 and 63 NASD licenses.

Presentation Contents

Automatic enrollment and other automatic solutions, such as life-cycle funds and managed account programs, have the ability to dramatically improve participant retirement savings outcomes. Learn about the new research that has shed light on how automatic solutions are impacting retirement savings for participants today and then examine how employees enrolled automatically to those enrolled voluntarily. The results may surprise you.

Guest Policy

Guests are welcome at our regular monthly meeting fee of $50. If you would like to bring a guest, just add his or her information to your RSVP, or you can notify our membership chair, Debby Coons, at (502) 561-1530, or Debby_Coons@aon.com.

RSVP Policy/Special Dietary Concerns/Reservation Changes

The lunch menu will be as follows:

Tomato basil soup, grilled chicken breast with white wine veloute with saffron rice and chocolate madness croquant.

Please note that members are asked to confirm their attendance at all monthly luncheons. If you have any special dietary concerns, you may indicate them in the "Guest" box on the RSVP form in the newsletter, or contact Membership Chair Debby Coons at the above telephone number or e-mail address.

If you need to make a change in your reservation at the last minute, please let Debby know as soon as possible. No shows are a recurring problem and continue to adversely affect the LEBC's efforts to manage expenses. As a result, members who need to cancel their reservation must do so by contacting Debby by noon of the Friday prior to the meeting. If a member fails to timely cancel his or her reservation and does not attend, the member will be billed a $25 cancellation fee. Please help us to control costs and spend the LEBC's money wisely. All members will benefit!

Annual Membership Dues for 2008

The LEBC has mailed invoices for 2008 membership dues to all Members. The annual dues for 2008 are $275, which is a slight increase from last year due to rising expenses. However, the Executive Committee is extremely pleased to announce an exciting line-up of speakers for 2008. A number of nationally known speakers have already confirmed. Just to mention a few: Sherry Brackney of the Department of Labor will present in April. Pamela Perdue, the well-known benefits author and speaker, will present in September.

There will be eight regular monthly luncheon meetings in 2008 plus the Annual Day at the Downs. Separate Sub-council membership dues have been eliminated. Members who wish to attend a Sub-council meeting will pay $40 at the door. Guest fees for both regular and Sub-council meetings will be $50.

As mentioned above, please be advised of our new policy regarding meeting reservations for 2008: Any Member who makes a reservation for a regular luncheon meeting but does not show (and does not cancel his reservation by noon of the prior Friday) will be billed $25. Any Member who registers for a Sub-council meeting but does not show (and does not cancel his reservation by noon of the prior Friday) will be billed the full cost of $40. More information regarding the dues and luncheon fee schedule is contained in the President's letter which accompanies each Member's invoice.

Member Drawing

Congratulations to Jill Perry of Frost Brown Todd, LLC. Jill was the winner of the $25 American Express gift certificate drawing for paying her membership dues by January 15, 2008. Please be advised that if you do not receive a confirmation email from the LEBC following the due date, please contact either the Membership Chair or the Treasurer as we may not have your correct email address.

Contest for New Member Referrals

The LEBC is sponsoring a membership drive and contest and will award a gift certificate to the Member who makes the most new member referrals by the LEBC summer break. Referrals will be tracked by new member applications. Be sure to participate in our membership drive!

Scholarship Information

Applications are now being accepted for the LEBC Scholarship Program. Starting this year we are adding the professional designation as an eligible program for receiving scholarship funds. In order to be eligible, an applicant must be a full-time or part-time college student studying in an accredited academic program leading to a degree, or a current benefits professional working toward a professional designation. They must reside either in the Louisville metropolitan area, including Southern Indiana, or be enrolled in a college in Kentucky or Indiana . LEBC members may apply, if eligible.

The applicant must demonstrate an interest in a career in the employee benefits field through either course of study or work experience. Current LEBC Executive Board members and their relatives are not eligible to participate. Prior recipients are eligible to reapply.

For 2008, the LEBC Scholarship program provides for a scholarship of $1,000 which may be split among multiple recipients. The recipients will be announced in June and be presented with the award at the Council's June or September monthly meeting. The professional designation awards will be paid to the recipient(s) as a reimbursement of actual fees paid within the preceding 12 months. For further information, go to the Scholarship page on the LEBC's Web site. Applications for 2008 are due by June 1, 2008.
